I have learnt today that Anti Virus software, McAfee and Norton, which we have on our Laptop and Desktop PCs, are not really that good at protecting your PC from Viruses.

Our Desktop PC will "crash" a few times most days, first thing in the morning, then is fine for the rest of the day.

It "crashes" onto the "Blue Screen of Death" with messages such as PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONE_PAGE_AREA and IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL etc. Havent a clue what any of these mean. When we took the PC to be looked at, it was fine for them!!! And some days we have no problems at all.

I have been advised to "reformat" my PC and "strip" it all down and start again, but havent a clue how to do this, or whether it will help.

Any advice will be gladly appreciated. Thank you.

Oh, and I am new to this website, and havent had time to check if there are already answers, so pls forgive me if I am repeating something that someone else has already written. When I get more time later I will surf the site properly.

Thanx

Anti-Virus is just a tool, I liken it to insurance.

With car insurance you can still have a crash, but you get help if you do.

Anti-virus will not stop you getting an infection if you are not careful, but it will help you remove bad stuff if you do.

That said not all AVs are the same, some are better at removing stuff than others, Norton and McAfee in particular are crap, only popular through smart marketing.

YOU are the best prevention, watch what you click.

If you need help removing a virus or malware then follow our guide and then the malware team can get involved.

You raised quite a few points there, but to start with, although Norton And McAfee are not considered amongst the best, there is no doubt that they are better than nothing.
You would be very unwise to run any PC, connected to the Net, without AV software.

If you want to do a format and clean installation on your PC, you will need to have either a Windows Installation Disk or a System Recovery Disk(s).

If you want to go down this road, you will be better putting a new post in the correct forum.

I have "de fragged" and run an Anti Virus scan, but that doesnt seem to have stopped the Blue screen keep appearing.

The Blue Screen is something we seem to be living with in our house, but Im concerned about transferring viruses to other people inadvertently

Put a post in General Software and give as much info as you can, including any Error Messages, together with numbers or stop codes.

This forum is for Virus, Security & Spyware only ;)
