I have a system here that has a couple of viruses on it, and is just bogged down with junk. I would like to completely clear everything to a clean slate and re install windows. I have never done this before and would like to know if anyone has step by step detailed instructions on how to do this job from start to end.

Also, will doing this reset my computer to like new? clearing everything off of the hard drive?

One more question.....i have a windows xp installation disc here that came with my dell laptop...and on the disc it says use this to re install windows xp on a dell pc.....the system i want to re install it on is a compaq....does this matter? or can i use the disc that says for dell computers???

It would be easier to go to the virus spyware and security forum and let me have a look. Cleaning malware with help is usually easier than it seems and you won't loose everything you have by doing a reinstall. The Dell CD won't work on a Compaq. The drivers won't work.

Lets look at a Hijackthis log real quick. Just post it here, I will move this thread to the security forum after you get it posted.

Download and rename HijackThis (HJT)

• Double-click on HJTInstall.
• Click on the Install button.
• It will automatically place HJT in C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe
• Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.
  • Close HijackThis and rename it.
  • Go to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.exe
  • Right click on HijackThis.exe and select Rename
  • Type in sniper.exe and press Enter
  • Right-click on sniper.exe and select Send To > Desktop (create shortcut)
• From the desktop open Hijackthis.
• If using Windows Vista, Right-click and Run As Administrator
• Click on Do a system scan and save a log file
• Hijackthis will scan and then a log will open in notepad.
• Copy and then paste the entire contents of the log in your post.
  • Do not have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Note: Although we have renamed Hijackthis to sniper, we will still refer to it as Hijackthis or HJT.

Moved to the Virus Spyware & Security forum.

It's not that bad, we should be able to get rid of this fairly easy.

Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall any of these (they may not all be there)

• New.Net or NewDotNet
• My Web Search
• RegistryPowerCleaner
• Search Assistant
• Also uninstall anything with Norton, Symantec or Live Update
• Now run the Norton Removal Tool

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46 and save it to your Desktop.

• Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
• Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
• Do not change any check box options!!
• Copy everything in the Code box below, and paste it into the Input script here window:

whenever i paste the script in and click execute an error pops up saying invalid script

Open this attachment and then save it to your desktop as a txt file.

Open The Avenger and click on the folder icon in the upper left corner. Find the notepad attachment you just saved on the desktop and double click it to load it into Avengers window. Now click the execute button and see if it works.
