Default Had a new harddrive, can't open msn :(

I've just registered so hello :) i'm not the best with computers so i need some help. Basically my laptop was dropped and it needed a new hard drive, had all that done. The technician put new spyware, internet security etc (AVG). onto my laptop. I've tried signing into msn but it says to check my firewall/proxy settings, i did a repair search (provided by msn) and everything was okay except for the "keyports". Any help or advice please?

Han

I presume the firewall is blocking the port that MSN needs to access the server.

first off when u say you deleted the old, basic msn, you do mean by going to cp and add remove programs right? i know its a basic question, but u said ur not the best with computers, and this could be a very simple thing made more complicated then it needs to be lol :) also, if its not because your old msn is already using the ports that ur new one is trying to access then it might b like dan says, ur firewall is blocking the ports that msn need.

What is the name of the firewall you are using?

What spyware program(s) do you use?

What is the name of your antivirus?

Yeah i did do it that way. The old msn messenger icon has gone now so i think its just the new live version of msn on here.

Welllllll haha. The antivirus is something called AVG, i think its one you download from the net, i was worried that it wouldn't be good enough, so i asked the technician whether i should get a norton or mcaffe on here. But he assured me this does everything. The spyware is something called spyware blaster and another thing called spybot search & destroy. I don't know where the firewall or what firewall it is. Its not the windows firewall as i allowed msn as an exception.

First locate your Firewall and see if you can find any updates for it.

If you do not have CCleaner please install it. Download CCleaner
* Once CCleaner is open use the default options.
* Click Analyze and it will show a log of what will be removed.
* Next click Run Cleaner to remove everything.
* Then on the upper left of CCleaner select the Registry tab.
* Click Scan For Issues.
* Then click Fix selected issues.
* It will prompt you to make a backup. For the first run I would suggest doing so.
* Exit the program and you are done.

Next
Open Spybot and check for updates. Download any available.
Next look for the Immunize feature in Spybot and Immunize.
Then run a Spybot scan and check for problems.

i still think ur old msn might b using the port ur new one needs. open task manager and c if theres one called msmsgs.exe. thats what the old msn was called in task manager (i reformatted my other comp today so i have the old version on that one) the new one is msnmsg.exe. in other words, if u see msmsgs.exe ur still running the old one, and it might b using the ports needed by ur new msn...

Is MSN messenger or Windows Messenger? Windows Messenger is a very old version that is installed on some older PC/laptops.

If so I asked on another forum and this worked for me:

Click Start.
Click Run.
In the open box type RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Click Ok.
