It makes no difference what he entered when he registered, if Google have a court order they'll release the IP changes and dates since he started the account, and the ISP responsible for the address on a given date and time will respond to a court order by identifying their customer's house address (and registration details, of course, but you're down to a physical proven address by that point). I only add this to the thread for information, not that I think you'll find it helpful but someone somewhere one day might.

Hi spot,

thank you very much for your explaination although I am not sure if I understood everything ;-)

Well, would there by any chance to get a court order or that he police will help in this case to get the IP address? I know, I should just forget about it but I really want to know who did this and why. I sent an email to the googlemail address yesterday evening, looks like the account doesn't exist any longer. Hope it will stop now.

As I said, if the content is illegal as well as distressing the police will help. You'd need to work out whether it was. I'm sure the police would give you their opinion if you showed it to them.

You would undoubtedly get the court order if you paid a solicitor to take it that far, and that would undoubtedly identify who sent the mail. It would be a cripplingly expensive alternative to having the police chase it as a crime.

At the end of the day it comes down to time and money.

If you are prepared to lose both, probably in substantial amounts then go for it.

If not just move on.

Okay, I think I don't want to spend lots of time and money with this if it is not sure that I will have success. And I assume it could also be that the emails were send from an internet cafe or public computer

But why does googlemail not send IP addresses? By this they enable people to do bullshit. As far as I know all other email provider send IP addresses.

Because they have to protect their users, just the same as us not giving out IPs of users that may fall out with each other.
