On certain received emails, where there should be a picture, I am getting a box with a little red cross in the corner. There seems to be plenty of advice about overcoming this problem where it occurs with XP SP2, but unfortunately, I am using 98SE and the suggestions for overcoming it are not valid for this OS.

The problem seems to exist in emails from one person in particular so don't think it is this machine causing it. I have looked for settings to allow pictures to be displayed but can't find anything appropriate. Anyone any ideas?

Are the images loaded as attachments or are they links? Could be that the user is not sending them correctly, ie, not your fault but theirs.

Neither attachments nor links - they are embedded images within the text of the email.

It could be that that one person is sending stuff in a non-standard way.

Can you right click on the red cross and select Copy Image Location and then go into Internet Explorer and paste what you copied into the Address Bar?

See if that brings the image up. If it is still a red cross you know the person who sent it has a problem.

I don't know if it is possible to right click on the red cross so it may not work.

You wrote these faulty image emails come from the same person. Its that person who is causing the problem by not attaching/embedding/including the image correctly. He/she may be unknowingly placing a shortcut of the image into the email instead of the actual image...thus the red x. One way this happens is when you right click a file and then "send to" then "email recipient", it places a shortcut in the email, not the real file. Thats what it does in mine using xp.
It sounds like you need to find out how this person is getting the image to the email.
