.AVI files are usually made up of reconstituted VTS files from ripped, copyrighted dvd's.

So, unless you can show you haven't downloaded these from a torrent/p2p site/network we're unable to help you as the practice is illegal.

Eh? That's kind of silly, though .avi is a wrapper, I download most videos (trailers and such like from IGN) as .avis, and most of the stuff I record (like in FRAPS) end up in .avi too. If he was asking about how to play .vob or something that might be a wee bit suspicious but..

hold up. your saying AVI is for illegal stuff??? i don't think so. FRAPS, which im SURE you all know of and/or use, only records in game videos in AVI. I also edit my videos and save in AVI to keep quality. please dont say AVI is a bad thing!!!! if it is tell that to the millions of users of FRAPS and see what they say to that. AVI is so large because it comes uncompressed when you record it with fraps. Video editors like Sony Vegas allows you to save it with many types of compression modes. including windows media 9 compression so i can play in windows.

Carbon, Cheespuff: Did you read and understand my post or just make an assumption based upon the 'feel' of it?

Basically, did you both see the word "usually" or did you miss that?

There's reasons why it was typed:

We've been inundated lately with similar threads, and the majority have been by people using a torrent site for illegal downloading. They've all been typed differently. There's also been a number of members asking for HJT help who have utorrent or similar showing up in the logs. It's telling us it's widespread.

Due to this we have taken the decision to be extra careful before advising the authors of said threads because the owner of TCF could, simply put, get in some bother. We aren't refusing help at all, we just want some confirmation on the legalily of the files before doing so. Do you guys think that's so bad? If so, I'd really like to know why, as I don't consider protecting TCF from harm "silly" in the least.

Let me say it another way then: As illegal torrents of the film variety tend to be .avi or .rar files i need you to show your .avi files aren't before we can offer help.

Is that clearer and easier to understand? Or are you suggesting .avi files aren't resident on illegal torrent sites? (Cheesepuff) because you've said so in the first part of your post.

So without thinking that the mod might have a good reason for the post you've still offered help anyway (Carbon). Can you not do so in the future please if you see a mod or admin say something along the lines of "prove it before we can help"

Regards.

I just didn't think it was fair to stereotype AVI as an illegal format. now that you cleared things up I apologize for my ranting and see you only wanted to make sure it didn't have anything to do with any illegal activity. i never knew AVI had anything to do with illegal movies and such. so it just came as a shock to me that there are statistics showing AVI is closely related to such crimes. sorry i made a mess of things. my bad.

That's a fair point. I can see how you arrived at that assumption. I'll rephrase in the future.

Default avi files, are a big no no

firstly avi files aren't that big in the download world these days. As a general it is xvid and vcd files and mpeg1 or mpeg2. No im not downloading illegal files. As my first question states why will my computer not accept avi files, windows media player 10, windows media classic, tmpgenc dvd author, mainconcept etc, etc all crash when loading an avi file. I have all the codecs for them and my computer recognizes that i have the codec but will not play. Comes up encountered a problem must close and then closes. Thought this site was to help not disrespect people or judge people on files. Avi files are from camcorder footages sent from other people.

Go here and try one of the K-Lite codec packs.

That should fix you up.
