Default Bland DVD-R Unrecongnized

I'm trying to burn dvd's onto blank Memorex DvD-R. Every time i insert the blank DVD the computer becomes really slow and the drive makes noise. I open Nero 6 and click the burn button (after i told it the video's i wanted) and it says Drive not ready, or no disc. I go into My Computer and open the drive and it says there is no disc.

My computer wouldn't play DVD's either. I downloaded AVS DVD Player not too long ago so i could play dvd's. I can watch DVDs but i cant burn anything. I have burned a DVD before with other Blank DVDs but ive wiped my comp sinse then so i dont know what is wrong.

Go to Device Manager/IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, expand the selection and right click the channel where the drive is located and select Properties/Advanced and check that your DMA settings have not reverted to PIO Mode.

im afraid i do not know where this device manager is. I looked in the start menu and contorl panel but i didnt find anything about a device manager. I did look into System Information and found a category labeled DMA with two channels: Channel 2 (Standard Floppy disk Controller) and Channel 4 (Direct Memory Access Controller). I could not click on them, It just displayed the channel, name and status of "OK"

Hmmmm ...... it seems as though only your HDD is getting picked up.
Does the drive show up in Device Manager/CD-DVD Drives ? ... if so try uninstalling it, then reboot the PC and check again.

Did you try uninstalling it and rebooting ? .... windows will automatically detect &reinstall it at boot up. If there is a corruption with the driver, this may flush it out.

I received this message from memorex tech support:
Dear Clayton,

I apologize for the confusion, but the Combo Drive is only capable of
burning CD media and is only able to read DVD media not burn them. As for
the Nero software that came with the drive it would only give you the option
to burn CD's not DVD's because the Memorex Drive does not have the
capability to burn DVD's.

Thank you for your Inquiry about your Memorex or Imation Product. With over
50 years of service, Imation and Memorex support groups, have joined forces
to give the best support available for their products.

No that is just offering you the option to recode to DVDR format, not burning to DVDR ...... I reckon you have to accept what your Tech Support folk have told you.

well thanks for the attention and fast replies. A shame that i didnt buy the correct drive i wanted but o well, pictures on boxes can be deceiving i guess. I've always wanted two drives anyways (wont have to keep swapping game cd's or downloading a whole homemade movie to make a copy) so this little problem is going to practically force me to get a 2nd drive.

Thanks again, (funny how i spelled "Blank" DVD-R wrong)
