Hey,

If I rip a blu-ray to .iso on my hdd, and then open that in Handbrake:

a) Can I convert it into something readable by iTunes and thus ATV
b) Will I be able to keep HD quality?

I've read about hacking the ATV, so that you can play any format known to man, as well as .iso's - but it requires loading a custom DVR OS, and thus losing Apple's original UI - which I actually happen to like .

So can I put it in some kind of container, keep my HDness as much as possible with minimal compression?

If it doesn't support standard h264 in mp4 or mkv or whatever I'd be surprised. Just rip to that and I doubt you'd have problems, the iTunes store uses it even.

Ok, thanks - you must think I'm mental I know you've helped me with very similar stuff before

But I'm on a never-ending (it seems) hunt for my perfect media setup...

The main issue with ATV is that while it ouputs in 1080, it only "supports" 720.

So the source file must be a maximum of 1280x720 @ 24fps in a H.264, it will then upscale it to 1080i - and then presuming you have a 1080p HDTV, it will then deinterlace it...

So it's slightly messy to be honest, an I expect theres a fair bit of quality loss with all the upscaling and deinterlacing and what have you.

If you downscale an original 1080 to 720, and then upscale that back to 1080, are you left with more or less what you started? Or is it just a stretched 720p image?

Wow, yuck. What a silly way to do it. Of course upscaling back to 1080p isn't going to look as good as a native 1080p rip, but if that's the only option it shouldn't look too terrible - it's more than just stretching it out. Keep in mind if you're watching this on a TV, the difference will undoubtedly be even more minimal, though - nearly unnoticeable from typical TV viewing ranges. Closer up (near monitor ranges) you may see a difference, but that'll be offset by the upscaling algorithms.

Should have got a Popcorn Hour or something but I don't think it'll be much of a concern. No way around it though, if it takes 720 720's all you're gonna get.

Yeah, that's what I thought. Doesn't seem to be a neater way round it.

Don't know why they won't accept a 1080p source. After all, you can if you hack it.
