Default Can't view video in wmp version 11

When I click on a file on the web and it opens in my wmp (version 11) I can here it but there is no video. If I go back to the video file and save the target to my desktop and open the file with VLC player software for instance I am able to see and here the video fine. Then, when I open the file again in wmp I can see the video perfectly fine - but I have to always open it in another software first, close it out, and then I can open it in wmp. If I shut my pc off then power-up, go to the web and try to open a video in wmp I have to go through the whole process again of saving the file, opening it in another player (VLC usually) and then, I can go to the file and it plays perfectly fine in WMP.

What's going on? Is there a setting in wmp that I need to know about? I've tried to look around a bit but no luck so far.

Thoughts?

I don't know but I'll check the next time I try to open one. Like I said, I don't have any trouble opening them in the VLC player and then after I open it with that player I can then open the file with the wmp. It's just when I click on a video file the first time and it default opens to my wmp I get a black screen with audio only. So I then save the target and open it with VLC - no problem. zzzzzzzzweird. Maybe I just have to set something in wmp but I don't know what.

Maybe try and update your video drivers?
Also if possible try it on another computer with windows media player 11 and see if it plays fine there. So we know more or less where to start. Since when did this start?

It's a codec problem, codecs are the software the tells a media player how to play different types of files.

VLC has them all built in, WMP needs the adding either manually or via a codec pack.

WMP is know to have issues playing some files despite having the codecs installed, just stick with VLC for those file types.

Yes - I heard that too about wmp (darn that Bill G. anyway - lol) - uncle Bill drives me nuts sometimes!

While on the web I have to save the file (target) then open it with VLC no problem. Just wondering why the files will play on wmp AFTER I play it on VLC but not BEFORE?

Thoughts?

And, I have an old pc (6 yr old Dell) with some upgrades (xp os) and I have no issues with wmp being able to open files from the web. It's just the Fricken (sp?) newer, pc with the fancy video cards-n- SLI stuff and on-and-on that's having the troubles with the video files.

In the end.......it's not much trouble to save the target to my pc and open it in VLC.

Try installing K-Lite to see if it clears up. I've seen K-Lite solve some very odd WMP problems in the past.

Sorry for the late response. I was taken away from my computer for a while.
The format is MPEG4
I ran a diagnostic tool that came with my codec pack. I don't understand any of it. Can I send you (someone) this information to see if sense can be made of it and the problem located?
