Default CD drive no longer working - Software issues

Hi Everyone...
You may be able to save my christmas...i went to burn a cd off i tunes the other day as a xmas present and it said my cd driver was not installed correctly...3 days previous i had been burning and ripping music with no problems...it is a FUJITSU SIEMENS AMILO laptop...I phoned the manufacturers helpline and we did the whole thing with the recovery cd which worked in the cd drive so it hasnt broken...the guy on the phone said there could be issues with some software on my laptop...I've deleted the cd drive from my device manager and tried to fix it that way but when i reboot the computer it comes up saying the installation has failed and this message appears on screen HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T10N ATA Device Failed....
Please please can someone give me any ideas how to get it working!!!!

See if this helps :

Go back to Device Manager/IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers expand the selection and right click the channel where the drive is located and select uninstall.
Then reboot and Windows will automatically reinstal the controller and redect & install the drive(s).
If there's a Windows glitch/corruption, this may flush it out.

The cdrom doesnt install properly when computer is rebooted and just comes up with the failed message and contact device manufacturer....i did that and they wanted to charge me 60p a minute cos they think its a software issue as it recognised the recovery disc!!!!

It sounds to me like the drive is faulty/dying.

Can you sse the drive in bios ?

i've been assured on 2 seperate occasions that the drive is not faulty as it recognises the repair disc on the reboot menu.........

Well .... the message "HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T10N ATA Device Failed" suggests otherwise.

Can you see the drive in bios ?

I'm a bit confused .... in post #4 you said :

"The cdrom doesnt install properly when computer is rebooted and just comes up with the failed message and contact device manufacturer"

but now you are saying ...

"it recognises the repair disc"

Does the drive show in My Computer ? .... as we need to establish whether it is installed or not ? ..... if it does, then dont worry about bios at this stage.

If it doesn't show in My Computer, to enter bios varies, depending on youtr PC/Laptop, but but there is a keyboard sequence at boot up, the Key to Enter bios (set up) may be displayed briefly when you boot up ..... if it doesn't have a look here for different options :
