If your drive is just missing from my computer then you could try this

[Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class
Key Name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Value Data: [Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters]
Note: Do not delete the Key or the Multi-String Values. Delete only the data values.
Exit Registry and Reboot

I had the same problem. Saw something on the web that said is a registry problem. I tried all the things listed here as well with no success. I finally reformatted and fresh installed windows. The drive can now be seen in Vista. I am guessing from what I read that it IS a registry problem, but so far I have no info on what caused it. The one thing I can tell you is that I check My Computer after each and every update or software installation to be sure that the dvd is still recognized.
