Default Editing Videos?

Hi, I want to make a video and add effects, like if I use a toy gun how would I make a lazer shoot out of it? I can think of some real cheap ways but it wouldn't look good at all hahaha, but if there's a pretty good way to add things like explosions and stuff that'd be much better
