The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk4\D.

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\D.

Anybody got an idea what these error messages mean????

I get hundreds of the same everyday but things seem ok at the moment anyway

Thanks

Ther worst-case is that the controller or the hard drive is failing. The reason it's not affecting you yet is that there's a hell of a lot of retries available before you feel the impact of dying hardware until it keels over clutching its bowels and screaming loudly.

If you start / run / msinfo32.exe you might, if you're lucky, have a channel conflict. I've never seen one myself.

If you own nice new clean disk cables (check the box your motherboard / computer came in) you could pull the old ones and see if it all goes away. Can you tell I'm a born optimist? If you don't, swapping the existing cables between the drives (leaving the drives connected to their original motherboard slots!) will at least reseat everything, and if it's one glitchy cable your error messages will switch as well and you'll know.

Thanks Spot

I have only one hard drive.......one dvd burner ....and the usual multi-cf card reader. So after what you have said it must be my hard drive or associated cable (all brand new)

I will try the confict but not being a born optimist i think the worst

That's actually good - cables do introduce poor connections and if this one's never proven itself it could well be that. I've had lots of duff cables in my time. Especially, not that it has anything to do with your problem but just because I'm sick of cheapo horrible USB cables, USB cables.

It might also be a good idea to grab the hard dirive diagnostic utility from your HDD maufacturers website and test the drive.

Also try reinstalling your motherboard drivers, as it could be the HDD Controller on your mobo that has issues.

I suggest you update your motherboard drivers like philthomas said. I doubt there is anything physically wrong with your drive.
