Default External Hard Drive+Windows Media Player Problem

right, i have a lot of music on an external hard drive. i never have problems playing music from external drives such as my usb stick etc, but recently windows media player can't seem to connect to my external hard drive and play files from it. it can see the files+locate and open the folder they're in, but not play them. i can play the files fine with other applications such as itunes.
can anyone suggest what the problem might be?

So you can view the files but are unable to play them via WMP? Did you have the most up to date version of WMP? And what operating system are you using?

hi
i use windows xp professional, and wmp10, but this problem has only started very recently. i've always been able to see+play media from my external drive, but wmp now comes up with an error message telling me it can't connect to the drive (but itunes etc will play it no problem)
