Hey, I want to get a lot of my films on HDD, the collection will be a variety of VHS, DVD and some Blu-Ray (It seems HDDVD is already beginning to go extinct..)

I'll be using something front-end, such as Movie Label probably.

So first off, VHS, I guess I'm good saving those as any old format, .avi or whatever, because the quality of the VHS is inferior to any commonplace format surely? However I'd probably use DivX for the sake of it.. partly because of file associations.. but anyway the point is, I don't think that should matter - correct me if I'm wrong, though.

Secondly - SDDVD, now if I have the usual VIDEO_TS folder and all that nonsense, will a front end work? How will it know where to start off? Basically, I hate the AUDIO & VIDEO_TS folders on my PC, what format can I use that has zero compression, and will give me the highest quality attainable?

And Blu-Ray, I've only just got my HD drive, as such I havn't actually bought a HD disc yet, so I'm unsure what is contained exactly, whether or not it's the same annoying arranegment as SD discs. So really what i need to know is what format can I use, that will give the highest possible quality in a single file, and be linkable from my front-end?

Thanks.

Both DVD and BD are best ripped to MP4 (DivX). AnyDVD is the only program right now that can rip Blu-Rays to HDD, so I'd pick up that and use it for everything.

Ok, thanks.

I actually have AnyDVD anyway, I was just unsure of the best format to use. So DivX will not compress the files and make the quality any worse?

And if I rip a BD to DivX, it will still be displayed in HD?

Correct, there has to be some compression used and even the DVD itself uses some, it's just a matter of which codec does it. DivX will give you highest quality. As long as you tell it to rip it in the native res, there will be no downscaling to standard definition of HD content.

Ok, I got round to doing the first one just now, and I ripped it to my HDD with AnyDVD Ripper, but it's just the VIDEO_TS folder still?

How do I convert it to DivX, or better still, rip it to the HDD in DivX in the first place?

I thought AnyDVD could do it all. Weird. Anyway, just grab Handbrake and tell it to spit out a MP4/AVI using MPEG-4 and that should give you your end product.

I think the deal with regular DVDs from Handbrake is that most have that CSS encryption on them so you need AnyDVD to spit out the unencrypted VIDEO_TS for Handbrake to mux to MPEG-4 (and AnyDVD HD to spit out the unencrypted Blu-Ray). Then Handbrake does the rest.

Ok, thanks, I downloaded Xilisoft DVD Ripper Ultimate last night, whch claims it can do it, looks like it can so I'll wait and see how that goes.

Ok, now my problem is the only Audio options to select are Stereo or Mono..

Can I not rip to DivX and retain 5.1?

You should be, I'm not familiar with the program. I really would use Handbrake even if it's another step.
