I am sure this is probably a very basic question to many of you
but how do you convert mp4 to dvd.
Do you have to buy the software and if so is there software you would
recommend.

Don't buy anything for this, anything claiming to do it at a worthwhile price better than freeware is nonsense.

The main issue here is that "DVD" is not a format, many formats are "read" by DVD players, some of them even "read" MP4.

Probably the easiest way for you to do it is to use Windows DVD Maker.

That will see you right, and also give you the option for preset menu's, and to customise your own. Being windows it is also very easy to use.

You can find it under Start.

Yeah but that can't really be helped if you're using video from a generic camera on a phone or whatever..

Yep ,,,, whatever software you use will be equally as bad. Obviously if you are starting of with a video resolution intended for a 2"or 3" screen and trying to convert it to play on a TV, via a DVD Player, the end product will be pretty ugly/unwatchable .... not worth the effort really imo.
