htpc software

Trying to make an htpc.what's a good software to buy?Not realy looking to run my cable t.v through the computer but wanted to make a multi-task/blu-ray/dvd player to hook up to the main t.v.

im confused by your question/
what is a htpc? or do you mean you want hdcp?

You really have two options, Windows or Linux. As I'm aware HTPC's run off a bog standard OS.
