ok, if you have all your itunes music organised then this will make it easier, please tell me if you know it is or not.

But first try updating the software, just go onto apple the website and download it, dosent matter if youve already got the latest one, but try, this will make sure its not a bug on your current itunes.

reply back if this way dosent work.

please note: that this will not get rid of your music.

Default i Tunes problem

so you manualy control where your music, when you add it, it dosent copy it auto into a folder, just to double check go onto i-tunes and:

go on the top bar: Edit -> preferences -> go to the tab that says advanced -> make sure it is on the second general tab on the preferences -> and look for a checkbox that has written next to it "Keep Itunes Music folder organised" does that have a tick in the box? -> now look at the one beneath it it should be "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" does this one also have a tick in the checkbox? -> now without changing any setting click cancel and come back here and tell me which of the above two have checkboxs if any.

ok so really you have two copies of your music correct?
you didnt mention what the checkboxs where this would help.

usaully if the check box's where selected it would copy these into its own private folder so it would know where everything is? but if it isnt that mean really all your music would be scattered all over the computer, some could be in the my music folder, but others would be in the folder that you have preselected for downloading maybe, when you have both of those check boxs selected it creates a copy and places it in a convient place for it to not only find your music quicker but stops you accidently deleting the only copy it has. though automaticully itunes has both of these options turned off to save space for the user, dont go changing those tick boxes yet.

ok, i guess you would like itunes to remember all your work done, i.e. play counts and playlists?

this might take awhile but you will need to do almost everything i say if you are wanting itunes to not only save your ipod from being wiped clean, but to keep your play counts, ETC.

ok what we need to first do is find where these setting are, so we need to search your computer for these:

go to start -> Search -> on the left hand pane click all files and folders -> in the search box below the sentence "All or part of file name" put in "iTunes Library" without quotations -> and under the pull down tabe "Look in:" change it to my computer, and hit search -> this may take awhile but eventually it will come up with some results -> now look at the results and find one that says "iTunes Library" not with any dates on the end of it and not the one that says "iTunes Music Library" just "iTunes Library" (please also note if you have multiple users then there maybe more then one that says "iTunes Library" next to the name there will be the place in where it is stored for me it is: "C:\Documents and Settings\Matthew\My Documents\My Music\iTunes" you are looking to find the one that has your username for the computer, it should be where my name is (highlited in bold) -> right click on the "iTunes Library" that had your name next to it as i mentioned above -> a menu will now appear please click show containg folder, now this is where your settings for itunes are stored, this is also where it will say to look for music, if this is similar to where you drag your music then yes you sort your music out in one of the best places to have it, but dragging and dropping into itunes, would just tell it to look at the file dropped onto it, now at this stage please do not move your music from where it usually is. -> i now need you to select all these files in this folder and to copy all of them into another place where you know where it is -> after this is done you now need to uninstall itunes, reply back when you are done.

sorry if this is abit long winded, and also for taking awhile to reply back, but also itunes just stuffed me up, but hopefully nothing a recovery can solve.

yep that looks correct, you may want to copy the other one incase you are unsure, but if its last modified date is when it was last working then all should be well.
