My wmp was not playing videos properly - sound but no video. So I switched to vlc - great little player - plays everything - until today!

I get a message that my video is broken when I try to open a video in VLC player. I click the try to repair choice but there is no video.

I've even done a system restore to last month - it's still not working. I removed my wmp 9 (because I have wmp 11). Then I got totally fed up - still no video - and tried to remove wmp 11 and I can't - I just get a message that it will be "rolled back to a previous version on wmp". What is that about?

I feel like umplugging my external 500 gb drive and them "scrubbing" (formating) my hard drives C & F. Maybe even taking this supposidly high end pc with sli platinum board with dual 512mb nvidia video cards and throwing the lot off a nearby cliff and buying a new pc.

Anyone out there know what might be causing this (no video) problem? Could it be a simple thing like a "setting"?

I'm totally frusterated with it........it's been going on for a while now. It started with wmp not being able to show video and now it's spread to EVERY player including VLC.

What type of video files are you using ... .avi .mpg ?? and what is the source ?
Sometimes files downloaded from torrents etc. are incomplete and as the index is at the end of the file, this is absent, hence broken video.

Is this happening with all files and/or have files that played ok previously, suddenly stopped playing ?

They're .avi and .mov files from my digital cameras. I've had no trouble viewing them in the past - these problems just started a while ago - first with wmp (WMP can't view one can't remember now which it is avi or mov). But now I can't even view those files (avi or mov or anything) in the vlc player. The VLC player did view everything - even the youtube files (flv) until today.

It's got to be a simple setting because when I switch to my wife's desktop I can watch videos with the VLC player fine.

I spent all day today trying to figure out what I did to my settings to block videos. Frustrating!

Any suggestions?

Well if it works on your wifes profile then maybe your user account is corrupt. Try creating a new user account for yourself and copying all the files accross and then deleting your old user account when done.

I created a new user account yesterday and I still could not view video - strange!

I have a pc tech going to drop by the house tonight maybe - hope he can find the issue. It's probably just some little thing like conflicting video software or maybe I haven't/had clicked a box somewhere - I don't know.

Thanks for your input here - appreciated.

Try uninstalling VLC, rebooting and reinstalling ..... if it's a program glitch, this may sort it out.

Uninstalling vlc AND wmp was one of the tasks I already did to try and sort this out.

I can't seem to get wmp 10 installed - it always default installs wmp 11 even though I don't want it. While installing 10 I get a message saying "wmp 11 will be installed" etc.......

I actually prefer wmp 9 but can't even get that one installed either. What's with these windows programs anyway? They're totally invasive and seem to really push their "weight" around don't they?

I have a pc tech coming by to the house tonight - hopefully will be able to have it solved at that time.

I'll let CJ know the outcome.
