Default I'm now the proud owner of Sony Vegas! but er..umm...how i use it?

i just got the software for my birth day (i paid half ) because i LOVE to do video editing ever since i was 11. windows movie maker just doesn't cut it any more, and well, i just have 1 small problem. when import the AVI files from my camera (JUST GOT A NEW ONE FROM MY GRANDMA!!! 10.1MP BABY!--not in video more though) and when i view them in the editor i can hear the audio but i cant see the video. when i add AVI from FRAPS its fine. is there such thing as different type of AVI????? and how do i go about making it able to see the AVI from my new camera. as of right now i have to go and convert each files to .WMV first and its a really big pain. if y'all wanna see the videos i already did feel free to ask! i love this new camera, and i would love to make it easier to make movies with
