Default Movie saving?

hello people ..i dunno if this is even possible or worth it but heres my plan ..tell me if i should pursue ...
ok i have a lotta movies but like any parent ,i have kids who destroy the family collection of DVD`s so what id like to do ..is hook a comp to my livingroom tv and DL ALL my movies onto a hard-drive than when they wanna watch a movie ,they just look thru the list of movies and click what they wanna watch and they can watch it without needing the DVD

now this is what i was thinking and like i said im a comp dummy so guide me in right direction if im not going that way or if i cannot go that way lol ...

im thinking of buying like a 250 gig external HD and a dvd burning program and a virtual drive program ....burn the movies to the external HD and than you would need the virtual drive to watch without the actual DVD being in the comp ...am i right and what else is my options ...
please help ...my wifes willing to buy this stuff for me for XMAS please please please
