Default is mp4 and mpeg-4 the same?

is mp4 and mpeg-4 the same?

because they say psp supports mp4's so i put some videos on my psp that are mpeg-4 and then when i went to my videos on the psp it said "Incompatible Data"

You sure it was definitly a MPEG-4 file not another MPEG like 1 or 2?
