Does anyone know an MP4 player which I can download free? I have tried several that Google threw up but either they don't work (I am using Windows 98) or else the user T&Cs are unacceptable. I only need to use it rarely so don't really want to buy one.

Any decent media player should do.

VLC plays MP4 files and pretty much everything else.

Many thanks. When you open the link to the version which works with 98, the following warning comes up. Are you aware of any problems or is this just an arse covering statement?

Warning: The following package is not up-to-date with the latest official version of the software. When using an out-of-date version, you may encounter important bugs or security holes.

Not sure what that is, have never seen the message on any machines I have installed it on.

As long as you are downloading the latest version I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I think it is because they haven't supported 98 for some time and consequently it has not been updated for a long time. I should think that if the last version they issued for 98 was OK then, it still should be. I will give it a go anyway. Thanks again.

Not sure if you're being sardonic there, Pete21!
I am happy with 98 as an OS, the only problem I have with it is the number of applications which don't support it, including many of the utilities like anti spyware. It is also impossible to get an external usb hard drive backup device which works with 98. It looks like I will be forced to install XP although that will be as a dual boot system to start with.
Downloaded vlc (for 98!) and installed OK. Seems to play the video clips fine, in fact better than the other players I have installed which tended to "jerk" the video. It remains to be seen whether the warning will be justified.

So how come your running 98 in the first place?

Because it works ok and no real reason to change. I don't like being forced to change from something which works just for the sake of it. Maybe I should change to Linux?

are you an advanced user? if not i would not recommend Linux ..i no my stuff but even i struggled to even install windows drivers on it!

true we are forced to upgrade our OS but the benefits are there
i would recommend xp pro the price has fell loads since Vista showed up
still if you want xp pro as cheap as you can get it
buy a second hand tower with xp on it.(to get that all importanant terial number)
you can download xp for free then put the serial number from the second hand pc in when installing xp. this is the craze at the moment as second hand old pc's are selling fast
