Helloo, newbie here. My laptop has begun starting up in mute mode for a a couple days now and for the first time my audio icon no longer showed. I went through control panel and unmuted the sound so I know it's not a hardware/software problem but I'm still perplexed. Any help on how to remove this mute startup? I'd be much obliged

Had a look in your start up settings? Run>msconfig>startup:

Hey yeah I have looked in the startup programs but I don't think it would be there as it's not a program, just a function of the system. Right? If it is there, at least I couldn't find anything that may've resembled it. Anything else?

Make your XP sound like Windows Vista! Just unzip to C:\Windows\Media and enjoy! IMPORTANT: When you extract to c:\Windows\Media it will OVERWRITE your current sound files. So back them up before running this file! You can find your current sound files in C:\WINDOWS\Media so just make a copy of that folder before you run this file. Then if you ever want to restore your XP original files, just copy the contents of your backed-up Media folder back into C:\WINDOWS\Media. http://themes.belchfire.net/index.ph...&showfile=5212 try this, if start up is still muted then you know its not the files in your xp sound pack in C:\WINDOWS\Media if you hear the vista sounds when starting up/shutting down then il help you restore your origanal xp sound files, remember to copy all the xp sound files from C:\WINDOWS\Media to your desktop or somewhere you'll remember, highlight them all > right click> send to> compressed zip folder.

The sound is not muted when I shut the computer down. I don't think the sound pack has anything to do with it. As I said, the icon was even gone. It appears to have been fixed now, at least for the time being. Anyways, thanks for the responses!
