Have you performed a Windows update recently? If you have then I find that it intends to update the audio card to the wrong driver.

Type devmgmt.msc into the run command and check that your audio drivers are install correctly. If they have a ! next to it, double click it, go to the driver tab and try to roll back the driver.

Remeber to restart if it sucessfully re-installs your previous driver

You can try go to control panel and see. Click on Sounds and Audio Devices. Make sure it's not muted or anything, and check the box which says 'Place volume icon in taskbar.' That might fix the speaker icon in the taskbar.
