Default Task bar, missing sound/volume icon

Ive tried everything for this one.
But a few days ago I had a virus that damaged many .exe files and some how knocked out my sound.
But I got alot of help in the virus forums and the virus was removed, but the sound problem still remains.

My symptoms are...

Sound when I play games, use windows media player and general computer noises and stuff.
But I dont get any sound for youtube and embedded videos.
I also dont have a sound icon in the task bar, even though its been set to have it appear.
Ive reinstalled codecs, drivers and other stuff like flash plugin's and still ... no sound icon or any sound on youtube.
I get sound on other things and I can change the volume by going to start/run and typing in sndvol32.exe (or going the long way through accessories/entertainment .. etc) but thats quite abit of hassle.
I also cant turn the volume down using my speakers as my speakers work via the computer settings and stuff.
I have a screenshot to verify that everything is in order for it to work:

Can anyone help me?
Ive searched and searched for ages now and its really starting to bug me.

Thanks!

Do you have access to an XP CD? You could do an in place reinstall which would preserve all your progs/settings.

Have you tried

sfc /scannow

to see if that helps?

You don't need the same CD, just anybody's that is the same version (Home/Pro) and SP2 if you have SP2.
