Default Transfering from camcorder to PC problem

Hi There,
I am new here, so apologies if this isnt the right place for this
I have a Panasonic NV-gs27 Camcoder, and am trying to transfer the video from it to my PC.
If I use MS movie maker and a usb cable, I can get the video ok, but no sound.
Panasonic have told me i need to connect via a Firewire cable, as the camcorder doesnt come with a CD with drivers it should then plug & play.
I have installed a new firewire card into my pc, and it has recognised it and installed the drivers for the card, but when I then connect my camcorder to the firewire card, nothing happens, my PC doesnt recognise it, I have gone through the add hardware wizzard, but it cant find it.
Is there a way of checking that my firewire card is fully working, or any other suggestions?
PC spec
XP pro
P4 3ghz
1.5g Ram
Many Thanks
Phil

Does the firewire card show up in the device manager (right lcikc my computer/propterties/hardware/device manager)? If it does, when you right click it and click properties it will tell you the status of your drive in the middle of the box that comes up. If it doesn't appread in the device manager, the card is most likely not working.

Also, do you have a Firewire port on your motherboard? because I tired the same thing with a firewire card and it didn't work, but then i rememebred I had a firewire port on my motherboard and that one works fine.
