Default Unreadable VOB files

I have recorded TV programes from my Panasonic DVD recorder and would like to back them up and use them on my pc. The pc (vista) plays the DVD fine with Windows Media Player. On the DVD there are 4 VOB files 3 x 0.99GB and one is 477MB which I tranfer from the DVD by dragging and dropping into an appropriate folder. I then rename the file to end in .mpeg. The first file has a blue screen on the mpeg icon but I can not get this first file to play, the remaining 3 files are all fine but these are only part of the programme. How do I get this first file to play?

Default Unreadable VOB files

You need to copy the entire contents of the VIDEO_TS folder to your Hard Drive and there shouldn't be any need to rename the vob files.
The VIDEO_TS folder contains ifo, bup and vob files, which make up a DVD Compliant vobset. If you remove the ifos and bups, the vobset may get lost, as these files contain the navigation and info regarding audio stream to play etc.

If you want to play the files, just double click the VIDEO_TS.ifo file

Hope this helps.
