Hi Pete!
Wich player do you want clean? Winamp or Windows media player?
Because with Winamp you do the following:

If you want to quickly clear your Winamp playlist so you can start over with new files, just press CONTROL-SHIFT-BACKSPACE. Your Playlist is now clear! You can also click the "Remove" button and choose "Clear Playlist".
With Windows Media Player you do this:

1.Click Options under the Tools menu.

2.Click the Privacy tab.

3.Click the Clear History button to clear Windows Media Player's recently played files list.

4.If you are using Windows Media Player 9, click the Clear CD/DVD button to clear Windows Media Player's recently played CD and DVD list.

5.If you are using Windows Media Player 10, click the Clear Caches button to clear Windows Media Player's recently played CD and DVD list.

I hope this helps

Yea do that if you want to clear your cache there, but if you want to stop things being added to the library go to tools>options>player tab then uncheck the "add media files to library when played" box. If you have the player on default view, press Alt to bring up the menus.
