What's your operating system?

Open a command line window. That might be Start / Run / cmd

type ipconfig /all

type echo that was before getting to the internet

then get onto the Internet

type ipconfig /all

type echo that was after getting to the internet

type ping 137.222.10.36

then browse until the problems start

type echo the Internet collapsed

type ipconfig /all

type ping 137.222.10.36

copy the content of the window (you might need to right-click the title bar to find out how to select all the text and copy it) into a reply here.

Head over here.. http://www.computer-juice.com/forums...476/#post28109

Do all the steps in that first post and then post a log in the Security forums here:

Good call. I wondered whether the IP lease looked OK and the DNS entries were stable, and whether the ping times were skyrocketing or the link was just plain dead. Once you've seen a hundred malware infestations you've good reason to just go for the jugular.

Yep

Had this a few weeks ago. Loads of random problems.... 404's, internet cutting out.

Tried everything to no avail... Finally analysed some logs and the computer had lots of infections causing the problems.

If the logs come up clean then I think it is the time to start checking IP's and DNS etc.

Who did you change it to...? Unless you host your own DNS server then I would have thought the only option is your ISP and that comes as standard anyway....

OK

I just don't see how this would help get the internet back, if the DNS server wasn't working everyone connected to your ISP's DNS server would have a dodgey internet connection

I've seen IP lease exchanges fail to set the DNS entries permanently and adding the addresses by hand can provide at least a temporary fix. It fits with the run two minutes and die picture but then, so do lots of alternatives, one of which is sitting up to your eyebrows in malware and having your entire bandwidth dissolve into frenetic uninvited activity.

There seemed to be nothing wrong with that log you posted and I could ping both name servers so there is nothing wrong there.

I expect it was just the modem had died.

As for MSN, there could be many different things causing it to stop working.

First of all try uninstalling it and then reinstalling it. That might solve the problem.

If not do what I said in this post. This still sounds like it could be malware related.

Head over here.. http://www.computer-juice.com/forums...476/#post28109

Do all the steps in that first post and then post a log in the Security forums here:

http://www.computer-juice.com/forums/f49/
P.S. You are entering the right password etc for MSN?
I have had someone say MSN wasn't working before and spent ages trying to diagnose it and then they remembered there password
