Default connecting to TalkTalk

My brother is giving me a nightmare with his TalkTalk connection.
He was having problems with SSL not loading and also his email account with them
I have:
discovered he was on Windows XP service pack 1. So I upgraded it to SP2. That didn't work
I tried numerous setting on his internet explorer to no avail
I re-formatted the hard drive installed Windows and the TalkTalk modem drivers only but still no change.
I AGAIN re-formatted but installed AOL instead and tried it on my broadband line. EVERYTHING worked perfectly.
I have just upgraded his RAM to 1GB and I'm going to try a different modem in his house.
I think his missus is getting fed up with the sight of me (and me of her!) so, does anyone have any other suggestions to solve this problem?
He's running a laptop with a 2.4GHz processor and was only using 256Mb RAM.
Thanks for any help

That's how I found out he was still using SP1. I tried to install IE7 and it wouldn't let me. I've got to get by the TalkTalk modem istallation CD first!

SP2 should install on a fresh XP install no probs.

The only time it has issues is on a non fresh XP install.

Default connecting to TalkTalk

I got everything installed and it seemed to be working OK until I tried his email.
What I didn't realise (cos I'm with AOL, I think) is that the laptop has to be cofigured to send and recieve mail through Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express in order to work properly with the TalkTalk online email account.
I configured Outlook express which he can now use to send and receive mail but can't import the address book from his TalkTalk account.
Not only that, but he can only receive e-mails using the online account. He can't send or forward emails and he can't access his address book at all, even though his TaslkTalk help software shows everything in order!
I now think there's a definite problem with the TalkTalk server as he can do everything with his Yahoo account that he can't do on the TalkTalk account.
I have NEVER liked the look of TalkTalk since it came out and if anything my opinion has worsened.
I've ran out of ideas, patience and time (1st beer not opened until 23:50 )

HOWEVER, if anyone can come up with a wee bit of inspiration, as usual, it will be much appriciated

I'm off to finish my beer
