Recently my Firefox has been playing up.

When I downlaod anything, no matter the file type or the website it's from, the downlaod will begin but then it stalls, then starts again then stalls. It will say "7 mins remaining - 182kB/s" then freeze. Then will go again and it will read something like "6 mins remaining - 177kB/s". And the trend continues. The timer doesn't take the stalling into account, it just literally freezes then restarts. iTunes is a 70mb files and it took over an hour to download with the speed no lower than 300kB at any given point, but still took forever. Also, a downlaod will freeze when it has completed. It will get to 99% then just completely stop indefinitely. It is only when I click pause and then unpause will it complete.

Also, recently, every now and then when trying watch youtube or whatever else, the video just doesn't load. It will laod the player but it doesn't buffer and the video never begins, this happens about a quarter of the time.

Websites are also playing up too. Today, just to test, I tried opening 10 random websites, only 4 of which loaded, the others just came up with errors. It was only after a reboot of the router they all started working again.

My friends with whom I share an internet connection have also been having Firefox problems. Lots of hanging and having to close it down. But only I have been having the downlaod problems.

Any ideas as to why this has only started happening recently? I've tried re-installing but that hasn't helped matters and is it my particular Firefox or the ISP because our speeds haven't been great recently. Every week I watch BBC iPlayer in HD, but this week it took forever to buffer, only when it was in normal quality did it stream, even then not brilliantly.

Do downloads and videos work normally with other browsers e.g. Internet Explorer?

I've tried Google Chrome and IE8 and it doesn't stall downlaods but they are nowhere near as fast as firefox. But there isn't a streaming problem with those two browsers.

I've the Greasemonkey add-on too, my housemate got this too but starting experiencing problems to the point where he couldn't use firefox, maybe it could be that. Although I've tried disabling it and it didn't help.

So the problem lies with Firefox itself. Try uninstalling all add-ons and reinstalling firefox.

Alternatively you could:

1. Close Firefox and go to your profile folder: %APPDATA%\Mozilla\.
2. Delete "Downloads.rdf".

I've just uninstalled the add-on "AdBlock Plus" and now everything is runing brilliantly again. A lot faster too. No downlaod stalling either.

Thanks for your help :)
