Either it's in the website's root directory and called favicon.ico (that's the default) in which case you can pick it up and save it, or it's at the URL pointed to (in the webpage's Page Source) by
Code:
LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF=
in which case you can pick it up and save it.

Where did "automatically" come from? I was answering "When I try for example to save the icon of [...]".

If your problem is that your bookmarks/favourites aren't showing the icon next to the page title then I think we might need to know which browser/operating system you're using.

Your problem seems to be (I'm guessing, I don't have a Windows 2000 computer using Internet Explorer to check with) that nobody else can replicate your problem. People browsing to a website using page title icons see them in the URL window and on bookmarks.

You're not, presumably, trying to say the technique doesn't display for other people with the same software.

You could try finding a vanilla Windows 2000 / Internet Explorer install to check that it displays them. Assuming it does, you could make your computer resemble the vanilla install. That's quite likely to involve reinstalling.

Microsoft no longer support or patch Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT or Windows 2000. The reason isn't purely financial. You're not, presumably, running a museum.
