Hi there,

I'm a bit of a forum freak and have found some really useful tips online for a wide vareity of problems...... now I'm hoping someone might have a tip to help out our computer fault, as frankly I really have no idea about them!

Got a Dell laptop which I bought in May 2007. Its running on Windows XP system with an Intel Centrino Duo sticker on it. I know nothing about computers and can't really expand on that as regards spec.

The is a really annoying one concerning using the internet. It logs on fine and certain websites (ebay, in particular) I can use without any problems at all. Other websites are a problem though, especially when I click on links to other sites. Whilst using things like Autotrader or Rightmove, it will be fine up until I want to click on the individual link to the car/house. At the point of clicking on the link, the internet will stop and the only thing which clears it is to to cntrl alt del and go to task manager, where it says the system is not responding. It will then offer to send a message to Microsoft as it closes.

Other systems (Word, Outlook) are unaffected throughout and all systems apparently work fine. It doesn't interfere too much with my day to day use of the laptop, it's just intensely annoying that on some internet sites the system will stop working and I can't use that particular site/link. And it really annoys the Missus too!

Can anyone help?

Lets do a quick check to rule in or out malware.

Download and rename HijackThis (HJT)
  • Double-click on HJTInstall.
  • Click on the Install button.
  • It will automatically place HJT in C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe.
  • Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.
    • Close HijackThis and rename it.
    • Go to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.exe
    • Right click on HijackThis.exe and select Rename.
    • Type in sniper.exe and press Enter.
    • Right-click on sniper.exe and select Send To > Desktop (create shortcut)
  • From the desktop open HiackThis.
  • If using Windows Vista, be sure to Run As Administrator
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button
  • HijackThis will scan and then a log will open in notepad.
  • Copy and then paste the log in your post.
    • Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Even though we have renamed HijackThis to sniper, we will still refer to it as HijackThis or HJT.

Hi,

thanks for the quick reply. Not wishing to be ungrateful but I hope you understand that I'm a little suspicious of downloads. Is there anything I can do to run checks without downloading from unchecked sources?

I understand your suspicions. The only way to find out is using tools that have to be downloaded.

http://filehippo.com/

If you like you can download it directly from Trend Micro. They are the antivirus vendors who maintain/own the HijackThis program.

Don't know what else to say. Check the posts in the virus spyware & security forums to see how it all works.
