Default My telnet too slow?

Hi

I recently discovered telnet on my computer, and decided to experiment with it.
After reading a few tutorials, I thought I was ready to roll.

I typed in "OPEN www.google.com 80", expecting something to happen.

It didn't.

So I gave up and tried a different site.

"OPEN www.hackthissite.org"
One tutorial I read said that after typing this it would come up with a login screen.
This time It came up saying it could not connect to the host.

In desperation I tried google again, and it has been trying to connect for the last 2 hours.
Is there something wrong with my Telnet?
Am I doing something wrong?
Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jon
