There are two different development streams but they feel very similar. lynx is a lot older, links is (imo) more developed, they both do a very similar job. Most linux distributions have links buried inside for command-line working, it's not infrequent to be on a machine with no X installed at all. They're quick to learn, it gets to feel quite addictive running around the Internet like that.
