Default Basic info about Linux on a desk top computer.?

According to the computer press, Microsoft will be releasing service pack 1 for Vista soon, and a major upgrade is scheduled for 2008. It seems that consumer caution has been well placed regarding Vista!Personally I am a bit fed up with all things Microsoft and when my XP instalation gives up the ghost and is no longer supported ( the clock is running) I think I will try something different- either Mac or Linux. Can anyone recommed a website that explains what Linux is all about, or a book maybe? I mainly use my PC for browsing the net, emails, and will be getting into digital photography in a big way, with all that this entails. Any help would be much appreciated.

Linux can do all that and more. Fact is you don't have to spend your precious cash on Windows. There are many distros in Linux to choose from, if you are starting out I would recommend trying either Ubuntu or Mepis (www.ubuntu.org www.mepis.org) download the live cd iso, burn it and try it out. If you like it, install it. If you don't like it try another distro :-) Plus that for Linux we have the Gimp, a great image editor (www.gimp.org). I do a lot of photography (canon DSLR, airshows that kind of stuff) and since 2003 I only use Linux.
