Open office does work with Linux. If you were to run Microsoft Office you would have to run it with Wine or crossover.

Firefox comes as the stock browser in a few distros so it can run.
With a program called Pidgen you can connect to your msn messenger.
Im not sure if avast has a package for linux but I dont think you will need it. I have been running ubuntu for years and have never encountered a virus.
And lastly there are plenty of music players that work with linux. From what i am reading Amerok is a good one.

I also recomend ordering or downloading a live cd to check things out. Its really fun to explore more than one.
