you may need to re-install grub follow these steps
boot the ubuntu live cd, go to terminal and type
sudo grub
this will get you a grub prompt at this promt type

Code:
 find /boot/grub/stage1
This will return a location. If you have more than one, select the installation that you want to provide the grub files.
Next, THIS IS IMPORTANT, whatever was returned for the find command use it in the next line (you are still at grub>. when you enter the next 3 commands)

Code:
 root (hd?,?)
Again use the value from the find command i.e. if find returned (hd0,1) then you would enter root (hd0,1)

now type this
Code:
  setup (hd0)
and quit and you are ready to go and by quit i mean type
Code:
  quit
into terminal
now grub will be re-installed and if you need help configuring it i can instruct you

What age was the computer? On some older models, if the boot files are too far down a large drive they will be inaccessible to the BIOS.
