I know that this is predominantly a windows forum but for those of us out there that use Linux or have used Linux in the past what was your favorite distro? My personal favorite is Ubuntu 8.10.

What do you prefer about it? There are lots of features which could be a priority for someone choosing an operating system. Speed, stability, range of applications, a focus on some area like multimedia or video production or network administration. Ubuntu gives daily update notifications and it handles dependencies, for example.

I like the look and the over all usability of it. It was the first distro i looked into and have tried many since but that still rains supreme for me. It makes for a good learning environment for the beginning Linux user.

I also prefer ubuntu mostly for the reasons the you stated. I also tried a different one I think it was kubuntu which was pretty cool and reminded me a lot more of windows. I've had too many problems with linux on my laptop however so I'll stick with vista... unfortunately.

Ubuntu is pretty nice. The best part, its easy to use and its free. Bad parts, not lots of programs for it.

There are tens of thousands of programs for Ubuntu.

What function do you want to perform that you can't find a program on Ubuntu to do it?

What program do you want to use that runs on Microsoft Windows but refuses to run under Wine in Ubuntu? I know there are some Microsoft Windows programs that won't run under Wine but it's precious few of them.

I used to enjoy using PCLinux but unfortunate it wont load on this machine! Next best distro for me to vote for would be Fedora
