...and password. I remember the password but not the username? I don't even remember it asking me to type in a username. Is there anyway to get it back without re-installing it?

Username and password is set on Install, not 100% but I think you will need to re-install.

1) It probably asked you for the root(top level account) password. Try the username root.
2) If it's not for the root account you can boot the machine in single user mode. Single user mode give you access to the system without the need for a password. http://www.debuntu.org/recover-root-...-mode-and-grub Now this tutorial is for root password recovery, but instead you can look in the /home directory after you've logged on. You might ask what's the point of passwords if you can just boot your machine into single user mode. The point of Linux passwords is to protect the system once it's booted up, and mainly for over the network. Single user mode is for maintance in case anything goes wrong with the system (ie, the password file got corrupted, or booting doesn't go very far). To protect your machine from people who have physical access to your machine, you should use a BIOS password. |

Boot-up from the installdisk and run it "live".
Open a terminal and type 'sudo -i' Mount the partition you installed ubuntu on to /mnt (e.g. 'mount /dev/hda1 /mnt') Look at the /etc/passwd file of your installed system (e.g. 'less /mnt/etc/passwd'), there you should see what name you used (probably an entry near the bottom, with an UID of 500 or 1000 or thereabout). Unmount /mnt, shutdown and remove the CD before rebooting. |
