Right thanks for reading, if i redesign a Linux distribution i.e change flash screen, colours, etc. will it become a separate distribution that i could then offer to the public?

No it will not. ANYONE can change the screen, the colours, the splash screen.
(You'll have to do a bit more work than that :-) )

The only thing you can say is that it is a hack of an existing distro.

An example is the Disto Kanotix, they started of as a Hack of Knoppix but forked about a year later when they implemented their own scripts and ideas.

DSL is another example, it clearly states on their website that it is based on Knoppix technology, about a year or two later they had learned so much that they became their own distro, simply because it went a whole other way than Knoppix did.

What a lot of forks do is use the Debian Distro as their template. I'm doing that in my own Distro (TTL.... version 0.7 "Red October" still not done...) this is fine as long as you work according to the GPL and TELL people that your distro is based on Debian.

Look at slackware, it has an offshute Distro called Slax

If you really want to build your own distro for distribution to the public you need to do some extra work

- Documentation
- Website
- work conform the GPL
- make sure people can ask questions about your distro (email)
- updates
- how to files

There is offcourse more. On the bright side however, EVERYONE is allowed to build his or her distro, heck I've been doing that since 2003. I made a hack on DSL because DSL was great but lacking some stuff I needed plus it lacked a good browser back then. I called it TDSL (Toms D*mn Small Linux) and stated clearly that it was a hack and based on DSL, Knoppix and Debian. Now however I've forked and my distro is now purely based on Debian Vanilla (ETCH) but a whole lot smaller, it should end up around 256 mb and must run from a USB stick. It doesn't have Gnome or KDE but instead it runs ICE Wm allthough the final version might run Equinox. I'm up to version 0.7c now and I'm still not happy with the result.
