Default Kubuntu

I installed Kubuntu 6.06 without any problems. I was able to connect to the internet and download images etc. but I cannot install anything. I tried installing Firefox but no go. I installed Kubuntu, from the same disc, previously on another computer and it worked fine. Whenever I downloaded to the desktop I got the option to install. This doesn't happen with the current installation. I may still have the earlier installation which I can check against this one. Any ideas what the problem is? One thing I will say for Linux, It's great for motherboards where the drivers are not available. Just install and everything works. On the old computer I thought the sound was gone but it worked with Kubuntu.

He will be off taking snaps somewhere I feel Mc although he would probably garrot me for calling them snaps.
He's quite an excellent photographer.

I tried ubuntu at the weekend and though it was pretty basic, the interface reminded me of Windows 3.1, not my cup of tea at all.

What kubuntu?

Is it better to look at?

I've tried to run Linux to no avail but Dave it does not in any shape or form resemble 3.1 mate.

Very true and the gui is not as "polished?" as Windows.

Hi,

Yep I've been absent for a while, had to give some trainings at work and I've been studying.... (gotta keep up) And I just bought a new lens for my camera.

What errors did you get? If the problem persists, install Automatix2 ( www.getautomatix.org) to see if that solves the problem.

Also have a look at Mepis (www.mepis.org) it has KDE and is pretty fast and 90 percent Ubuntu.

Well... that is because with Linux (GNU/Linux) you can choose the gui you want, and yes we have interfaces that look almost exactly like old style window 95 (ICE WM) but there are also gui's that resemble XP or are totally different from XP.

Kubuntu (6.10 or the new 7 version) uses KDE which looks a lot like XP and vista so a lot of people choose that. Gnome is more old style but is very very fast.

Bottomline, if you don't like it choose another GUI, you have that kind of freedom with Linux, you're not stuck with it. You can alter, reconfigure or just try another. For fun try Mepis 6.5.02, you'll like that one (www.mepis.org) and since these are all live cd's you can try out which one you like best.

Sounds like I need Kubuntu if the GUI is more polished, that's what I'm into.

Thanks Tom.

No problem, also for fun, look at Beryl (you can download it through Synaptic), if you are into the polished and high end desktops then Beryl is the thing to have, it is the 3D interface for Linux. It is very very cool. (requires a minimum of a Piv 2.6 ghz 512 mb to run smoothly, so not as bad as Vista) It looks better than vistas aero interface and you can configure it a lot more, the themes are very very cool to use.
