Ubuntu is about as undisputed as it gets for being the starting point, de facto, best UX, call it what you will.

I agree on Ubuntu , It's about the most friendly distro of Linux I've ever ran. How ever Ubuntu has a lot of weight, You'll find that you won't need most of the programs which come pre-installed. Anything that you need can normally be found within the Ubuntu Software Centre. I would recommend reverting the default Unity theme to Gnome as I've found it to be counter productive, this can be done by reaching the log in screen and selecting Gnome from the drop down list.

Just a couple of commands you may make use of once you've installed and updated Ubuntu (assuming you've gone with that)

    1.
Minimize/Maximize set to the right: gconftool-2 --set /apps/metacity/general/button_layout --type string menu:minimize, maximize, close

    2.
Flash: sudo apt-get flashplugin-installer / Or search for "flashplugin-installer" in the software centre.

    3.
Java: sudo add-apt-respository ppa:ferramroberto/java then sudo apt-get update then sudo apt-get install sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fonts during the installation you will need to navigate a screen using the tab key to select ok
    and then press enter.

P.s Wine can be a real pig when it comes to compatibility.
