I've run dual monitors happily, it's bog standard linux usage. A pair of 20" 1600x1200 things from Dell, both in portrait mode, just because I had the two screens on my desk at the time and it seemed a spiffy game to play. Moving a mouse that far got tiring.

As for the other bits, yes it's a problem. Very few manufacturers write linux drivers, they come from open source contributors. Open source contributors focus either on hardware they take a fancy to or to hardware that sells in huge volume and they're never on the bleeding edge of recent releases (though the hardware released with linux drivers is). It's the same under Microsoft operating systems, you check what you own against the operating system supported hardware list before you buy the operating system. The same goes with linux. Before you buy the hardware you check whether it'll do what you want it to do. Taking some random assembly of kit and plastering a random distro on it is very hit or miss.

When I was young I was taught that you started by deciding what you wanted to achieve, and then you found the software that let you achieve it, and then you selected the hardware adequate to run the software, and that way everything was wonderful. People seem to have forgotten that process.

When you need linux mint advice you'd do best to use the irc.spotchat.org server #LinuxMint.com channel, and the corresponding #mintcafe to see what people think of things. When I have irc running there my username's spot, give me a wave.

The advantage of the channel is there's usually at least 30 people active in there so you don't get stuck waiting for attention.
