I didn't completly understand:
"for an old machine use xfce, and beryl has now joined with compiz which is available from the repos if you are on an older machine you can install gnome easily"

also, about the adverts. when i turn on my pc, it shows a vaio logo, then pentium 4 logo, then it becomes a blank screen when it the cd is in the drive

How do you manage to get a vaio boot screen when you power on a macbook? I thought we're debugging these problems for a macbook platform, not a sony platform.

Honestly, just so you know another time, saying what hardware we're working on makes a huge difference to what we can offer by way of a fix.

http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-189586.html may or may not be relevant but it fits your description exactly. It depends a bit on the Vaio model. In general, Sony went their own way years ago when it comes to hardware choices. The results are pretty so long as you stick with the operating system they install before sale. They're quite like Apple in that regard.

xfce is manly for older machines, it has less eye candy for gnome or kde
compiz has joined with beryl and is called compiz still, you can download it from the repos (online server that can be accessed through add remove programs)

make sure the cd boots in the mac still, failing that either download the gnome version and try that or install ubuntu

O yea. and i can't edit my above post, and i am not trying to bump this thread.

But for the GUI
Why is XFCE for lower end or older comptuers

I currenlty have a XFCE Beta version of mint. I thought that the XFCE looks better then the Gnome, but which one is more convenient and does it effect how beryl runs?
