Hi

Linux can definetly be used to share files for a Windows network.

But as far as acting as a server it really depends on what you define as a "server".

What does your current windows server do? Does it have an active directory to control the other computers and network users?

Many Thanks

I'm not a Linux guru but I know that what you want to do is possible because that's the setup we had in im last job. I believe you need to run "Samba" on your Linux server.

That's all I know I'm affraid.

Cheers:
Chris

Hi

Unfortunetly linux can not act as a Domain Controller which is what you would want to remotely administer computers and users on your network.

You can use a linux server to share files with windows computers using Samba; but you will not have the control you have over the computers with a windows server.

I hope this helps.

Many Thanks

If they won't admit it, then no one actually knows...

MSN is all done my Microsoft OSs and all of their websites etc, hotmail is all ASPX so Windows based etc.

The majority of what they use is Windows based. I think they outsource some DNS though that gets put on Linux servers.
