I finally got Ubuntu working, my video card was apparently the problem even though i have installed Ubuntu the regular way before. I just used the alternate installer.

One, how do i install things?

I got these instructions, but i'm not sure how to do it
STEP 3: Install
Type "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.12-pkg1.run" to install the driver. NVIDIA now provides a utility to assist you with configuration of your X config file. Please see Chapter 3 of the README or run 'man nvidia-xconfig' for details on usage. Instructions for those wishing to edit their X config file by hand can also be found in the README.

Also, where can I download themes and boot screens and stuff like that for my Ubuntu?

Also, i am experiencing visual lag. when i minimize and maximize my Firefox window, it kind of lags a little bit on how it shows up

first off what is your graphics card, you should see it in the restricted driver manager you may need to enable it, secondly if you are on gnome try www.gnome-look.org
log in screens are called gdm, there are icon screens and also download emerald from the repos for imo better window borders

choosing a distro depends on the hardware u got.. but i pretty much believe that ubuntu supports Nvidia (ilove that word)..

go to add or remove programs thing then search for video card drivers or nvidia.. you might need to reload the programs list..
or use synaptic package manager..

you can also try the PCLinuxOS distro. it automatically installs NVidia drivers for you.
