Default Older version of Linux for Pentium II...

Older version of Linux for Pentium II computer? I have an old Pentium II laptop with latest version of Kubuntu installed; operation is very slow and I've been told I need to install earlier version for faster program access. Kubuntu only goes back to 4-2005 as I understand it, and I hope someone can guide me to a proper choice of (free) downloaded programs. As a Linux novice, I have no particular version in mind, and will appreciate advice and source of download.Sail 7915
