You want to look into doing a dual boot.

I dual booted for a year with XP and Xandros Linux before I got rid of both in favor of Ubuntu.

If you're new to Linux, it might be worth installing Ubuntu via Wubi which install Ubuntu "as" a windows application, meaning if you try but don't like you can just remove it from add/remove programmes in Windows.

That, and it's just as functional as a normal ubuntu bar hibernate/sleep - which have never worked for me in a normal Ubuntu install anyway!

with the newest distro of ubuntu(8.10) it gives you the option to install the os right inside windows.
